Tourism Awards : TANAPA Wins Two East Africa Regional Awards for Outstanding Conservation Work

By Jacob Kasiri, Dar es Salaam.

Tanzania National Parks (TANAPA) has received two prestigious honours at the East Africa Conservation Excellence Awards 2026, recognising its contribution to wildlife protection, biodiversity conservation and environmental sustainability.

TANAPA won the Outstanding National Parks Conservation Company of the Year Award, while Ruaha National Park received the Excellence in Wildlife Conservation and Protected Area Management – National Park Award 2026. The awards were presented during a ceremony held at Serena Hotel in Dar es Salaam on Saturday October 31, 2026.

Guest of Honour Mohamed R. Ally, Director of Business Support Services, representing Dr. Andrew M. Komba, Chief Executive Officer of the National Food Reserve Agency (NFRA), commended TANAPA for its conservation leadership. He noted that the institution had continued to protect rare and endangered biodiversity, ensuring threatened species survived and their populations increased despite growing conservation challenges.

He also highlighted Ruaha National Park’s contribution to food security, noting that its conservation efforts help protect vital water sources supporting irrigation and rainfall, thereby strengthening agricultural production and food availability.

Receiving the awards on behalf of TANAPA Conservation Commissioner Massana Mwishawa, Ruaha National Park Commanding Officer, Assistant Conservation Commissioner Emmanuel Moirana, said the recognition would motivate the institution to strengthen conservation efforts and ensure natural resources continued contributing to national economic growth, environmental sustainability and food security.

Tanzania has 21 National Parks, including internationally renowned destinations such as the Serengeti, Nyerere, Ruaha and Tarangire, as well as Mount Kilimanjaro. These protected areas preserve vital ecosystems, support diverse wildlife populations and contribute significantly to tourism, employment, investment and the national economy.

The awards followed an evaluation by the East Africa Conservation Excellence Awards Committee, recognising organisations contributing to conservation, biodiversity protection, climate action and sustainable development. The honours also acknowledge the dedication of TANAPA’s workforce, government institutions, communities and development partners in safeguarding Tanzania’s natural heritage for present and future generations.
